Eleanor

For those of us not around at the time, it might not have been clear why Eleanor Roosevelt mattered so much to some people. Besides some unsavory accusations and unavoidable facts (like being the first lade through FDRs terms of office), well, what was there?

Here's one thing: she used to do a daily column published by United Feature Syndicate. It starts with 1936 and continues until September 1962. There are items about the war and its ending (a column evidently written ahead of time), her husband the president, the bomb (which she refers to familiarly enough to suggest that she knew it was a possibility for a while) and rather a lot about unions and labor and full employment. It's an impressive volume of writing.

It also turns out that each column ends up roughly the size of the daily postings here. Similarly, it's a daily look into a different Crisis. Which may be worthwhile.
